Our camera club, El Dorado Camera Club, has been invited to show some of the members photos in the Cameron Park Library.  I have the honor of being the first one to show my prints.  There is room for 6-8 prints and so I have been poring over my photos trying to find a theme and some photos that would represent me as a photographer.  I first thought that I would show my landscapes because it is a library, after all.  But, I don’t think landscapes represent what my passion as a photographer really is.  I love a beautiful landscape, but in the back of my mind I always think a person would really bring the landscape to life.  With that in mind, I’ve chosen several of my portraits for printing and as is always the case, sometimes they look great on the computer screen, but when they are printed, I find things that I don’t like.  So, I’m printing a few extra just in case.

The theme I’ve chosen is “Retro”.  I think these are some good examples of my Retro work.

The above photo of Holly was taken at the Heidrick Ag. Museum in Woodland, CA.  Here are a few more that I took at the same place.

Then, I had a few more shots that I felt fit the theme of “Retro” but were taken at other places and at other times.

This is a bride at a wedding I did last March.

I took this photo at a winery photo shoot in Napa, CA.

This was taken of one of my favorite subjects, Aerolle, at a church in Elk Grove, CA.

And last, but certainly not least, this is my best friend who wanted me to do a photo shoot of her for an upcoming very exciting event (which I will be mentioning in another post.)

I will only use 8 of these in the library (which ought to spice up the library a bit), but the others I will hang in my studio.  I’m printing them 12×18 inches, which is an excellent size for home (or library) use.  I’ll be hanging them next week.  I’m very excited.

Hope you enjoy these.

carl brunberg - Love this Karen. Great croppings.

I entered the October Print Competition for the El Dorado Camera Club on Thursday with 9 prints.  I’m honored to say that I got 5 First Place winners and 2 Second Place winners.  Here is a picture of the judge, Albert deBruijn, talking about some of the prints up for competition.  He was an excellent judge and I learned lots from him.  He spoke about quality of the print (focus, f/stop, etc), composition, emotional value, story, color, etc.  All the things that I want to know about as a photographer.  His photography is wonderful and he specializes in HDR. You can see some of the previous winners to his right.

Here are my winners:

Sisters

First Place: Black and White Portrait

Dead Trees

First Place: Black and White Scenic View

She’s a Looker

First Place: Color Portrait

Bear and Striped Salmon

First Place: Color Animal

Nevada Central Railway

First Place: Color Open

Daisy in Fall

Second Place: Color Scenic View

And Finally

Salmon for Lunch

Second Place:  Color Animals

It’s always fun and exciting to contribute to a print competition.  You never know how the judge will judge your prints and what the competition might be.  It’s sometimes hard to hear the criticism, but always worthwhile.  If you want to improve your photography, it’s a great way to learn.

Jackie Jean - Great job! You have some very nice shots

Black Bear and cub.  Unusual to see a blond Black Bear.

This is a slideshow using images and video I made over two weekends in the Lake Tahoe Area.  We visited Sorenesens, Hope Valley, Taylor Creek, Emerald Bay and some other less known areas.  At Taylor Creek we were treated with a mother bear and her cub fishing spawning salmon out of the creek.  It was very exciting to see.

Kokanee Salmon.  The stripes are actually shadows cast by the weir.

Enjoy.

photowannabe - Karen, I just love your pictures of the Fall Sierras. My Hubby and I thought our day with Steve was just magical. The Tahoe area is one photo op after another.

I had the pleasure of joining a workshop put on by Betty Sederquist at Venezio Winery and Coloma.  It was a very hot day, but lots of fun.  Betty is a wonderful photographer and it was an honor to learn from her.

It was a little too early for color in the vineyards, but we all got some great shots anyway.

We also went to the Blacksmith shop on Main Street in Coloma.  The Blacksmith on duty (a volunteer) was great and allowed us to take lots of pictures of him.  This shot was taken with available light only.  Large opening behind me and to camera right and left.  This allowed wonderful natural light to surround everything in the Blacksmith shop.

After the Blacksmith, we went up to the old Emmanuel Church.  They were preparing for a wedding that day, so we had to be fairly quick with our photos.  Fortunately, the bride placed some flowers at the alter just as we were leaving. They were simple and beautiful.  I wish I could have seen the wedding.

Then, we went back to the winery for some wine and cheese tasting.  The wine was good and the cheese (from Dedrick’s Cheese Shop in Placerville.)  It also allowed us some time to cool off and relax because around 5:00 we headed back outside to take some pictures of some models in the vineyard.

All in all, it was a great day.  Thanks, Betty.

    Worker - ?Hola!
    Todo din?mica y muy positiva! 🙂

    Worker

My husband is a part time chef.  He frequently makes our dinner.  I especially like his Sunday night meals, but that’s not the point of this post.  My husband made the food for the wedding in Lake Tahoe a couple of weeks ago. My daughter acted as sous chef.  My two sons and my niece served the food.  The china was from the groom’s grandparents.   It was a family affair.

The food was fun and delicious.  The bride and groom wanted to stick with food from their heritage.  The bride’s heritage is Irish and the groom’s heritage is Cornish and Scottish. So, my husband scoured the internet to find tasty servings from the United Kingdom.

There were three kinds of stuffed potatoes (Irish), Irish Soda bread with smoked salmon and a cream spread (Irish and Scottish), bangers (Cornish), potato pizza (Irish) and other goodies.

The food was a big success.   The bride and groom loved the food and so did the guests.  My husband and daughter were heroes. Of course, they have always been heroes to me.

All in all, it was a beautiful family wedding.  Much success and congratulations to my brother and my new sister-in-law!
