It’s been a rough season for us as my dad has been in and out of the hospital since the middle of November.   This will be the first Christmas that he has not spent with his family…ever.  He’s in a full care nursing  facility at this point after living in an assisted living apartment just a month ago.  The difference?  A stroke.  Strokes are not good for anyone, but it is especially hard on him because he is also struggling with his memory.

So, I’ve been trying to document all of our Christmas activities in word and photos…like a docudrama…so that he will be able to participate through photos.  I was over there today visiting him and I brought my little photo book.  He was able to pick out several members of the family and even smiled a little.

These photos are for my dad, who has always been there for me.

My brother sent me a beautiful flower arrangement with a candle in the middle.  I used my star light filter to get the lights to sparkle.

The other day it snowed and I wanted to go out and take some photos, but the roads were pretty icey.  So, I settled for taking a photo of our street on the way home.

Corby has been actively involved in decorating the house this year, unlike years before.  Usually he dreads the whole Christmas decorating thing, but not this year.  It even makes this little snowman happy to see my husband involved.

We like to make a gingerbread house every year, but this year it hasn’t turned out so well.  First, the frosting was too stiff and we couldn’t squeeze it out of the container.  Then, we thinned it out a little which made it too soft, so the roof kept falling off and the walls were caving in. Sigh.  When the houses (we did two this year) were finally ready to decorate, all the decorators had given up and gone home.  I wonder if the dumb houses will last till next year.

This is a picture of my oldest son trimming the tree with some of the ornaments we have collected over the years for him.  It was always our tradition to purchase one special ornament per child per year so that when they got their own home, they would have a start on their own ornament collection.  Even though my son doesn’t live with us anymore, he put his ornaments on our tree because he didn’t have a tree of his own.  Maybe next year.

So these are some of the photos I made for my dad’s Christmas photo book.  So far, he likes them.  They are good memories for me, too.

Teresa K - Beautiful holiday shots Karen! I hope your Dad recovers soon. Have a blessed and merry Christmas.

Lesley Cox - I’m so sorry your dad won’t be home for Christmas! I can only imagine the stress you’ve been going through. I loved all your photos though, so festive (well except the bleeping gingerbread house!)Your brother sent us a nice flower arrangement too and will spend tomorrow morning with us and the kids opening presents. It will be really nice. Have a very Merry Christmas!

I just uploaded the new version of Pro Photo and I am still trying to work out the bugs.  Bear with me while I contact my web page guru (aka my brother) for assistance.  I think my new web page look will dazzle even the most jaded.

You can look at some Christmas ornament photos while we are waiting…

When my husband and I were first dating we were both on limited budgets, so he helped me make my Christmas decorations for my tree.  I bought a bunch of little white plaster ornaments, some paint and some brushes and we painted our ornaments.  He painted this little penguin over 25 years ago, and it’s still one of his favorites.  I think he is waaay cuter than the ornament.

Some of the first ornaments I ever made were little felt ornaments.  I think I made these in the 80’s, and I still love them.  Here’s a little Santa from the set.

I bought this little plastic ornament in honor of my husband’s and my first Christmas as a married couple.  It is really not very pretty or interesting.  I’m not even sure why I got it, but we still hang it every year.

I made this nerdy little ornament (photo shows front and back of same ornament) the year after we got married.  I think I was learning to cross stitch and this was my first attempt.  This one always makes me smile.

So…I always like to go down memory lane at Christmas time.  These are just a few of my memories.

(PS  I did a little digital scrapbooking on these photos.  I used elements and papers I purchased from scrapbookgraphics.com.  There are a bunch of very talented designers over there and these little graphics make digital designing a snap.)

p baker - I still have the ones you made me Karen, along time ago.
Next year I will have them on my tree in our new home in
West Sacramento. Always love to read your blog. Love you
    dearly my friend. PB

I’ve been busy the past couple of days with Christmas decorating, book making and making these:

These bags and tags are pretty easy to make.  I just went over to Staples and picked up some big tags, traced the tags on the back of wrapping paper, cut them out and glued them on one side of the tag.  Then I used stickers and other scrapbook-type elements to decorate the tags.  I did the same thing with some cheap bags I picked up from Michaels.  My family likes to use bags for wrapping because all they have to do is drop the item in the bag and stuff some tissue paper on top.  In the past, they haven’t been very imaginative in their Christmas wrapping…turning their noses up at the colorful rolls of Christmas paper that I dutifully buy after Christmas every year.  They instead go for plain brown or white bags that I have on hand in my craft closet.  They usually just write the name of the recipient right on the bag (making sure we can never use them again for anybody but that person.)  These bags are not very festive, but they do the job.

So, this year I’m helping the helpless out a little  by preparing holiday pre-decorated bags.  There is a method to my madness, though.  Decorated bags look better under the tree (and thus, in my photos) then do ugly bags with names scrawled across them in black marking pen (no offense to any of my family members who might be responsible for the ugly Christmas wrapping.)

When I’m not making bags and tags, I’ve been up to my virtual neck in 2008 family photos.  Every year I make a Family Photo Memory Book using the photos I’ve taken from the year.  I make the books for my mother-in-law, who lives in Portland, because she’s not around during the year and it’s fun to show her what the family has been up to the past year.  I also give one to my dad because his memory is not good.  He looks through the books quite a bit and it helps him to remember the people he loves.  My family also demands one for our house, because they love to look through them and remember all they’ve done in the past year.  Now, even my children’s friends look through the books to find out if they’ve made an appearance.  When they don’t find themselves, they remind me of when they were up to visit and ask me why I did not include them. Sometimes when they visit during the year they tell me that this would be a good opportunity to take a photo of them to include in my yearly memory book.

So, this year my book was quite extensive.  Last year the book was about 40 pages.  This year it hit the 80 page mark.  I’ve been living, eating, drinking and not sleeping the stupid memory book for the past two weeks.  (Going through my thousands of photos gave me a chance to throw out a lot of bad and useless ones, so that was a good thing.  Frees up my memory.)

I uploaded the book last night on Picaboo just in time to have it ground delivered for Christmas.  It took about 3 hours to upload it, but it is in to the printer!  I have included family, friends and even some of my photo shoots in the book.  I hope it prints up well.

It really is quite easy to make a memory book and the cost for a 20 page book is very reasonable through most sources.  I’ve used picaboo.com, shutterfly.com, blurb.com, mypublisher.com.  There are other ones available…snapfish, mixbook, dotphoto, etc.  I like picaboo because I can download the bookmaking software onto my computer and they have great layouts that make bookmaking quite easy.  They also have great service.  (Last year my three books were delivered on Christmas Eve, much to my delight.  However, two of the books were the ones I made, but the third one was another family’s memories…even though the cover had our family’s picture on it.  Picaboo responded quickly and apologetically for the error, sending me a new book without charge.)

Today it is snowing, so I’m hoping to get some Christmasy type photos for the scrapbook.  Merry Christmas.

Teresa K - Holy cow Karen, you are so talented in many, many ways. Homemade Christmas bags? : ] That’s fantastic. They look pretty cool too.

My niece

This past weekend, Thanksgiving weekend, was a time to visit with my family and spend some time at Tahoe with my brother and his daughter.  Although I love to take photos of people, there is no better photo opportunity for me than photographing my family.  This weekend was great for that.

My niece (above right) asked me to take a few head shots of her for a Christmas gift for her grandfather.  So, I took her outside and we just had a good time together taking some photos.  She’s quite photogenic (maybe aside from the above photo) and a fun gal to be around.  She and my daughter (above left) are close in age (6 months apart) and close friends.  They also look quite a bit alike…many people mistake them for sisters.

So here are a couple of my favorite photos that we took together.  Isn’t she just the cutest thing?

She also brought her boyfriend along.  So, I dragged him outside to do a brief photo shoot of him.

He was cooperative and fun.  It doesn’t hurt that he is very handsome.  I enjoyed getting to know him a little better.

But, the most fun was when I took my niece, my daughter and this young man outside to do a photo shoot with the three of them.  They found some old hats in the cabin and insisted on using them as props.  I’ll let the audience be the judge.  (I told them to pretend they were at a cowboy’s funeral.  This is the pose I got…snort.)

Thanksgiving with the fam…and boy what a fam.  My family tradition is to head out to Plymouth (how appropos), CA, to a little one room school house, which my large, extended family rents for the day.  Usually between 100-150 people show up to celebrate the day.  Yes!  ONE HUNDRED TO ONE HUNDRED FIFTY PEOPLE…all eating turkey, bringing food to share and chatting it up with people that they hadn’t seen since the year before.  It is a little overwhelming, but great fun.

So here are a couple of my favorite people patiently waiting for Thanksgiving dinner.  The beautiful girl looking into the camera is my niece.  My oldest son and my niece’s brother are across the table.  My oldest son’s beautiful girlfriend is seated next to him.  Boy, am I a lucky gal.

My son’s girlfriend has the most adorable son in the world.  He has personality and good looks.  What a very fun kid.

This is my favorite nephew.  If truth be known, he’s also my only blood nephew, but even if he wasn’t my only nephew, he would still be my favorite.  Just look at his adorable girlfriend.  Who wouldn’t be enchanted with this couple?

Here is my oldest son, his beautiful girlfriend and her fantastic three year old son.  The more I get to know these two people, the more I have fallen in love with them.

My niece brought her boyfriend to the huge family Thanksgiving.  Both of these two darling young people who tagged along with my niece and nephew are brave souls.

I am definitely blessed.

Lesley Cox - How wonderful that you are still able to have the annual family reunion/thanksgiving. That’s quite an accomplishment each year! Your photos are fantastic, as usual! Cam and Cassie told me how cute they thought the little boy of the girlfriend is. They were quite enchanted by him from the sounds of it. I’m glad you had a wonderful Thanksgiving.
